Here’s your sign

Have you ever looked up at the sky and noticed a shape in the clouds?  Maybe you see a butterfly, you point to it and ask your friend if they see it as well.

Maybe they do or maybe they say something like “uhm, no. But do you see the dinosaur over there?”

While this is a silly little exchange, the truth is that we can find symbols and messages everywhere we look.  The answers to some of our most burning questions are available to us in places as seemingly innocuous as the clouds or our dreams.

The two questions that may be coming up for you are “why do these symbols/shapes matter?” and “how do I find the answers I’m looking for?”

Let’s tackle these one at a time starting with the why.

We all know we have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind.  Our conscious mind is responsible for the intentional thoughts we think up and the actions we take. Our unconscious mind is in charge of keeping our body alive (which includes all of our driving beliefs and stories, but that is a different topic for another time).

What you may not be as familiar with is your Higher Self.  This is where our spirit resides.  This is where our soul’s contract is residing (our purpose for being here), where our intuition lives and perhaps the source of our “gut” feelings and other unexplained reasons in life.

Our Higher Self does not have a formal mode of communication.  Unlike our conscious and unconscious mind which we can “hear” in our head or “feel” in our body, the higher self communicates in different ways, mostly through symbols.

This is how we attach meaning to things.

Let’s go back to the butterfly in the clouds.  When you think of a butterfly, what does it mean to you?  What does it represent?

I can guarantee the conclusion you draw will be different than mine. Yes, there may be some overlaps and similarities, and yet, they will not be exactly the same.

The reason for this is the Higher Self symbolic language.  Mine is different from yours.

My Higher Self is trying to communicate something different to me than yours is to you.

I think of butterflies and the first thing that comes to mind is emergence and transformation.  I take this one step further to mean the beauty of the changes going on in my life right now.  While the process I’m going through is not always comfortable (and downright scary at times)  I can think of the butterfly and have faith that I will make it out just fine on the other side.

This is the message I need to hear right now.

I know, this may sound a bit “woo-wooey” for you. And that is perfectly fine.

You may think of symbols as just things we see or dreams as just the brain’s way of detoxing at the end of the day.

Perfectly valid. I’m sure there is science out there as well.

All I’m trying to say is that you can find deeper meaning anywhere you look.

This can be particularly reassuring when you are feeling lost and afloat and have no idea where to look.

Because the answer can be anywhere.

So now we go back to the How question (at least if I haven’t lost you somewhere in the Woo yet).

So how do we pull out the nuggets of wisdom available to us when we look?

The first step is trust.  Trust in our Higher Self so that we can acknowledge and actually be open to receiving the information.

As we start to trust, we start to receive more intuitive hits.  When it comes to symbols specifically, this means listening to the very first idea that pops in your head. No judgment, second guessing or explaining away about it.

It may sound something like this.

Question: Look at that butterfly, what does it mean to me?

Answer:  Emergence.  (paying attention that this is the first thing that comes up. It is easy at this point to think “that is a weird word I don’t use in my regular everyday life, it must not be the answer.”  Go with it anyway!).

Question:  Hmm… What does emergence mean to me? (you can add “in the context of” something as well.  For instance, if you are looking for clarity in a work situation, your marriage, whatever. Change the context and you will also change the meaning)

Answer:  Going through the process of changing my life is tough and scary and yet it’s going to be so WORTH IT!

Continue this question answer going deeper and deeper and the meaning will become deeper as well.

Again, it’s important to check the ego on this.  Our ego wants to say “that’s silly” and “why would that be important” and a huge list of things that don’t serve when we are searching for answers.

So trust, allow and be open to the messages and they will be there for you.

What answers are you waiting on?  What do the symbols around you tell you?

Have fun!

This is very similar to something I heard about calles the five whys. You can take a feeling or a thought and just do this questioning five times. It gives you fantastic insight into yourself!
